Some very talented people have opened their restaurants and homes to my camera and appetite, often sharing stories of their inspirations as we document (and inevitably consume) their edible art. It seems to me that each recipe is performed a bit like painting a canvas with disappearing ink, all while knowing each finished effort will be gone moments after it is created. So a chef is the opposite of a photographer in a way, and the permanence of these highly visual creations must come from the camera and photographer creating a volume of images in the often short period of time when each dish looks its best.
Sessions typically take place in clients' homes and businesses, but I also work in my photo studio (with kitchen and 1000 sq ft of indoor work space, 500 sq ft gated outdoor space, easy parking, and a short walk to the grocery).
